World Music Day In Budapest & Pécs On 1 October
"Continuing the traditions of past years on October 1, the organisers of World Music Day invite the people of Budapest to take part in spontaneous music-making for pleasure. This year the European Cultural Capital has joined the initiative: at a major event they are presenting music and dance culture based on Hungarian folk music that links folks across national borders, ages and musical styles.

At the free events in the public spaces of Pécs the public can hear songs sung in formations never heard before.

Star musicians in Budapest squares

Violinist Yehudi Menuhin launched World Music Day in 1975 with the aim that cities should hold music events on this day and musicians make music spontaneously outside the concert halls. Budapest joined the initiative two years ago and is continuing the tradition this year.

In the Academy of Music’s parking area as well as other spots in Budapest – in the pedestrian underpasses at Nyugati tér and Blaha Lujza tér – professional musicians representing a wide range of genres – among others Béla Szakcsi-Lakatos, Barnabás Kelemen, the Kaláka and Makám groups, the Budapest Chamber Symphony and Új Generáció – will fill public spaces with music.

In Deák Ferenc tér representatives of the Kamaszfesztivál (Adolescent Festival) will give open-air singing lessons in the morning and student music groups will play in the afternoon. On the central stage in Liszt Ferenc tér – where music will be played continuously from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. – cellist István Várdai, ambassador of World Music Day will also appear and give a virtuoso cello performance.

Anyone willing to join the programme and give an ad hoc concert on October 1 in an unusual place of their choice: in the street, a shop, a restaurant or even at work, can register at www.azenevilagnapja.org. Those who upload a video of their own “concert” to the website can win valuable gifts.

Music and dance for pleasure in Pécs

During the day artists will link up their productions, passing the “musical baton” from one to another to provide 5-6 hours of uninterrupted music-making on the 3-level giant stage in Pécs in Kossuth tér. In addition to the talents discovered in the Music and Dance for Pleasure television talent quest, the public can enjoy performances among others by Béla Ágoston, the Elemér Balázs Group, the Csík Orchestra, Mariann Falusi, György Ferenczi and the Rackajam, András Lovasi, Mókus and the Fabula Rasa, Nikola Parov, Péter Novák, the Pécsi Szimfonietta, Ágnes Szalóki, Kaji Jag and István Balogh from the Etnorom, Ágnes Künstler, Role from Csikszereda/Miercurea-Ciuc, and the Duna Artistic Ensemble.

There will also be a world premiere in Pécs: within the frame of a year and a half long project young Hungarians participating in the Roots and Routes European talent fostering programme put together the programme that can be seen for the first time as part of the Pécs European Cultural Capital events. They will then take the mime play to festivals in the UK, Belgium, Italy and Romania.

Song and Dance of the Sun

The programme in Pécs will open and close with the Song of the Sun that, in keeping with the spirit of the event, is an arrangement in various styles of an original folk song (original folk music, jazz, blues, funky, world music, Roma). All the evening’s musicians, singers and performing artists participate in the 15-minute production.

Dance of the Sun choreographies are also being created with the participation of renowned choreographers. Before the event, together with Péter Novák they will visit schools and workplaces in Pécs to teach the choreography that can be easily learnt by anyone with average dance skills to as many children, young people and adults as possible. This will enable the “civil” dancers to match their skills at the event, in separate groups and together"
