Jobbik Asks Szegedi To Quit MEP Seat In Hungary
The national leadership of Jobbik on Monday called on Csanád Szegedi to return his seat in the European Parliament, which he won on the party list. Jobbik president Gábor Vona underlined that the decision is not a consequence of Szegedi’s recently discovered Jewish ancestry, but was made because he tried to bribe a person to keep that ancestry secret.

Szegedi announced at the weekend that he would give up his party positions but keep his seat in the European Parliament.

He said yesterday that he will decide on the issue after the European legislature’s summer break ends. Szegedi would be entitled to a full MEP’s salary during that time.

Szegedi maintains that the audio recording on which he is heard offering money to a man who threatened to disclose his ancestry is a falsification.

Szegedi does not want to keep his share in the far-right weekly Barikád published jointly with Vona’s wife Krisztina Szabó.

The party’s confidence in Szegedi was already shaken in the spring, as he was not re-elected to the national leadership, Népszabadság points out.
