The Famous Choir Of Westminster Abbey In Hungary On 25 June
It is perhaps not exaggerated to call the latest venture of Filharmónia, the concert series entitled “The Golden Age of Britannia”, a great sensation in the history of concerts. It presents the marvellously rich English church music heritage of two centuries from 1500 to 1700. The music of the four concerts organized at St. Stephen’s Basilica is taken from the time of four successive rulers, from King Henry VIII to William III of Orange in chronological order. The performers are all London-based, world-famous ensembles of international renown: The Choir of Westminster Abbey; The King’s Singers; Ensemble Voces8; New London Consort.

The Choir of Westminster Abbey is widely acknowledged to be one of the great choirs of the world. Since its establishment as a choral foundation of boys and men in the fourteenth century, it has played a central role both in the daily choral services in the Abbey, and in the many royal, state, and national occasions which take place there.

King Henry VIII is generally not remembered for his qualities as an educated man and a patron of arts although the young ruler–a composer himself–maintained the largest and perhaps most outstanding orchestra of Europe (consisting of 58 members) and assembled the best singers of the country in the choir of the Chapel Royal. The golden age of English Renaissance church music started due to the activities of John Taverner, Christopher Tye and their contemporaries at that time and lasted for two centuries.

At the coronation of Henry VIII the choir of Westminster Abbey provided music. Ever since then the legendary ensemble has preserved the centuries-old tradition of boys’ choirs at English cathedrals.
