Photo Review: Funky Pho Vietnamese Food In Downtown Budapest
Pho is a traditional Vietnamese beef soup that needs a good few hours to prepare the stock, but now you can get a fast 'street food' style taste here in Budapest. Compared to the simpler North-Vietnamese version, Funky Pho adds more spices, making this meaty soup even more delicious. This local pho joint makes 27 litres of soup using 20kgs of beef bone, 3kgs of shin, onions, ginger, Vietnamese cinnamon, a special type of anise, cloves, and a couple of other 'secret ingredients'.

XpatLoop.com recently checked out Funky Pho, and we loved it, while there we had a good chat with the owner (hyperlink to his interview) who had this to say:

"Pho (with the special parboiled beef balls, or with the traditional scalded flanks/cooked beef shank) 1390Ft

The only thing we would never consider adding is any kind of flavour enhancer, and this is what makes us unique!

…Same, same, but still different, as the famous Vietnamese proverb would say.

As a ‘topping’ we recommend the special spicy beef balls, which are cooked on the spot when the hot soup is being poured. While you can find soup with parboiled sirloin in all Vietnamese restaurants in Budapest, the special Pho soup can only be found here. The delicious beef shank is another important addition to the soup, as it is always cooked in the soup absorbing all the goods’ verifying why pho is a pho.

Rice Noodle Salads (with beef, chicken, or tofu) 1390Ft

Our rice noodle salads are definitely one-of-a-kind, thanks to the large amount of vegetables and salads, special herbs, and the optional toppings (beef with lemongrass, chicken with ginger, or tofu) added. A tasty Vietnamese sauce sprinkles everything other than the tofu, which needs another type of sauce in order to enhance the original taste.

Summer Rolls (with chicken, tofu, or pork balls) 300/piece

This is a type of dish that doesn’t require too much explanation. Basically, these are little rice paper rolls filled with salad, vegetable, rice noodle and the optional meat or tofu. The pork ball is a typical Hanoi speciality, a little bit similar to bun cha, which is also a grilled pork & noodle dish.

Vietnamese coffee is a real delicacy, carrying the flavours of chocolate and hazelnut, made by a typical Vietnamese “filter machine,” always served with condensed milk and with ice, if needed.

The weekly menus, that usually involve the relishes of the Far East, are continuously enhancing the options above."
