Police Disperse Budapest Szabadság Tér Protest
Police removed one by one the demonstrators who had gathered at Szabadság tér on Tuesday to protest the construction of a monument to victims of the German occupation in World War II.

Some 50 uniformed officers from the emergency police carried out the action.

The removal occurred after the Eighth District notary on Monday ordered that property at the site be protected at the request of the builder of the memorial.

The demonstrators began to assemble early Tuesday afternoon and police officers began removing them shortly after 3 p.m.

Once the demonstrators were taken outside the construction area, police asked for their ID’s and told them that misdemeanour reports will be filed against them for occupying a property.

Some 23 demonstrators were removed while other demonstrators repeatedly shouted, “Democracy, democracy.“

Those removed include several Holocaust survivors.
