Budapest Pride Festival Week Begins
Actor and director Róbert Alföldi opened the Budapest Pride Festival for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer community on Friday evening at the Holdudvar club on Margaret Island. Cultural, artistic and public affairs programmes are scheduled for the week-long festival, culminating in the annual parade next Saturday.

A total of 25 embassies representing Western Europe as well as Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, the US, Israel, Lithuania and Slovenia declared their support for the festival in a joint statement.

They said they trust that the authorities will “not allow those of extreme views to disrupt what should and will be joyful occasions”.

Celebration of diversity is a sure way of popularising respect for human rights, the statement added.
