Xpat Opinion: The 10 Most Outrageous Things In 2017 Budget According To 444.Hu

Hungarian news site 444.hu published an article Thursday entitled “The Top Ten Most Outrageous Things Financed in the 2017 Budget. While one can certainly argue that ridiculous (and superfluous) things are financed by states around the world, it is worth pointing out here that 444‘s list looks especially outrageous when one considers the dismal state of education and health-care.
Moving government ministry buildings to the Castle District: HUF 49,400,000,000 (USD 180,266,034)
The activities of Cabinet (propaganda) Minister Antal Rogán: HUF 22,000,000,000 (USD 80,280,420)
Paks II nuclear power plant expansion (that is starting to look like it won’t happen): HUF 99,700,000,000 (USD 363,816,267)
Stadiums and sports: HUF 220,700,000,000 (USD 805,358,577)
A (horse) riding hall: HUF 1,700,000,000 billion (USD 6,203,487)
The György Fekete-led Hungarian Academy of Artists: HUF 10,500,000,000 (USD 38,315,655)
State-run media: HUF 70,140,000,000 (USD 255,948,575)
The Hungaricum program (which decides what is super Hungarian and what is not): HUF 500,000,000 (USD 1,824,555)
National Politics Activities (which also funds the government’s activities in Hungarian communities outside the country): HUF 6,666,000,000 (USD 24,324,967)
The Modern City Program (this is the campaign-like program where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (pictured, right, with Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga) runs around the country and gives certain cities money): HUF 152,800,000,000 (USD 557,584,008)
On a side note, 444.hu points out that drug prevention in Hungary is funded to the tune of around HUF 350,000,000 (USD 1,277,188).
