Y'Akoto Concert, Margaret Island, 17 June
The Ghanian singer Y’akoto performs for the very first time on the stage of the Budapest Summer Festival. Having lived in the harbour of Tema until she was 11, today the iconic pop-soul diva calls Hamburg her home, commuting between Paris, Stockholm, Los Angeles and the African cities Dakar, Accra and Lomé.

Her “urban music” brings cultural inspirations, instincts and intuitions together. Characterized by a bold and daring style, her newly released album Mermaid Blues is encompassed by the profound presence of soul and sensuality.

Y’akoto’s dark, expressive voice has been compared to jazz icons such as Nina Simone or Billie Holiday. Living the motif of freedom just like Simone and Holiday, Y’akoto breaks the chain of expectations, singing songs of respect towards nature and its forces that are greater than anything mankind could ever achieve.

Merging blues, neo-soul and ambient pop, Y’akoto’s sophisticated performance is encompassed by deep passion. Her art is more than music: it is an attitude about life, an uncompromising force and a quest for soul.

Y'Akato concert on 17 June 2017 (Saturday) 8 pm at Margaret Island Open-Air Stage
