New Underground Link Between Déli & Nyugati Stations?
The Prime Minister’s Office and the municipal authorities are examining the option of building a tunnel linking the capital city’s Déli and Nyugati railway stations, with the involvement of European Union funding.

Balázs Fürjes, government commissioner for Budapest and its agglomeration, said that a plan had been drawn up as early as 1937 to connect the two railway stations with the tunnel, and such a plan should be revisited today.

Déli railway station would be put underground, paving the way for surface areas to be developed.

Similarly, in the case of Nyugati railway station, a large area would be freed up and part of the railway would be placed underground,” he said.

The opposition LMP party said it will collect signatures in the coming weeks to demand the full-scale renovation of Budapest’s metro 3 line, including the provision of wheelchair access. Giving a press conference at one of the metro stations of line 3 on Saturday, Antal Csárdi, a Budapest councillor of the party, said the government “is gambling with the lives of Budapest residents” when it refuses to see the importance of the metro reconstruction and will not start the work immediately.
