Fewer 'Foreign Workers' Last Year In Hungary
The number of foreign workers in Hungary fell by 6% from 50,258 in the first nine months of 2019 to 47,610 in the same period in 2020, investigative news website G7 calculates.

This is more than the decline in the number of jobs in Hungary but smaller than the decline in the number of Hungarian workers in Austria.

There were 28,942 foreign workers in Hungary in 2017, when the government eased the conditions of entry for those in sectors with labour shortages and lifted the visa requirement for Ukrainian citizens.

New work permits fell by 8% from 2019 to 2020. The number of non-EU foreign employees changed only slightly but other EU citizens left Hungary, causing a 14% decrease in their number.

Ukraine sent the largest group of foreign workers last year, but their numbers are also declining.

The number of Serbian workers began to fall in 2019. An increase was seen only in the number of people coming from India.
