The programme has been put together in cooperation with Hungarian publishers, Budapest’s cultural institutions and state agencies, the office told MTI in a statement.
Programmes have been designed to promote reading and the notions of action, freedom and community, the statement said.
“We believe that through books, reading and shared cultural experiences we can express the essence of the freedom of mind and knowledge, as much as we can expose issues related to environmental protection and climate change, and this way we can also exhibit what we have in common and what connects us humans,” the statement cited Mayor Gergely Karácsony as saying.
UNESCO’s decision is expected in the summer.
The first UNESCO World Book Capital was Madrid in 2001.
