Budapest Drops Out As Host Of Tennis Fed Cup Tournament
In a surprise move, the Hungarian Tennis Federation has cancelled plans to host the Billie Jean King Cup tennis tournament, formerly known as the Fed Cup.

International Tennis Federation (ITF) president Dave Haggerty said he was astonished and disappointed by the decision.

The Hungarian federation informed the ITF on April 22 that it could not host the Budapest final of the tournament because of the pandemic.

The women’s team competition was revamped in 2019 with Budapest winning the bid to host the 12-nation finals at the Papp László Arena but the inaugural edition to be held last April was postponed because of the pandemic, Reuters reports.

The event was rescheduled for last month then postponed indefinitely.

Hungary has hosted an international fencing tournament during the pandemic and will host the World Judo Championships next month.

Magyar Közlöny said Hungary earmarked nearly Ft 21 billion for the tournament. Hungary had won the right to host it for three years.
