Analyst Warning of Potato and Pork Shortages in Hungary
Shortages of potatoes and pork may develop this month, as domestic reserves will run out in January, agricultural economist György Raskó told Jazzy Rádió.

There will be a need for imports, he added, but high import prices in relation to the officially set domestic price will discourage imports.

The consumer price for these basic foods is fixed, but once domestic stocks run out, the much higher import wholesale price will cause considerable losses to retailers, he warned.

Raskó said the price of pork may rise by 80% in the near future, as a result of the price-caps.

Large chains can spread the loss caused by the fixed prices across their many products but about 1,000 small shops generate continuous losses, since they are unable to finance the difference between the purchase price and the officially-set consumer price, Napi writes.
