The Best Chef 100 list has been around since 2017, and now it is worth checking out because of its Hungarian involvement: Szilárd Tóth, chef at Michelin-starred SALT Budapest, has been ranked.
The Hungarian chef is 93rd on the list, which is edited by photographers, food writers, critics, and foodies.
This year, Dabiz Muñoz, chef at the DiverXO restaurant in Madrid, was voted the best chef in the world. René Redzepi, chef de cuisine at Noma, which has been named the world’s best restaurant for years, came in fourth, while Ana Roš, chef at Hiša Franko in Slovenia, came in third. Interestingly, the line-up is packed with Spanish, French, and Scandinavian chefs, with very few Americans and Asians on the list.
Three Hungarian chefs have now made it this far: in addition to Szilárd Tóth, Ákos Sárközi, head chef at Borkonyha and Textúra restaurants in Budapest, and Ádám Mészáros, who was responsible for the kitchen at Onyx restaurant when he was nominated.
SALT Budapest, also employing Szilárd Tóth, was awarded its first Michelin star in 2021, and the Green Star, a sustainable hospitality award, in 2022.
According to the concept of the restaurant, Hungarian ingredients, flavors, and memories will appear on the plates in the most innovative way.
In Hungary, there is a growing number of restaurants using local and seasonal ingredients, both in the capital and in the countryside. Restaurants are a pillar of the basic tourism infrastructure and can also be an attraction in their own right, provided they offer the right quality.
This year, the Hungarian edition of the Michelin Guide continues to feature two 2 Michelin stars and seven 1 Michelin stars, while 59 restaurants have been awarded Michelin recommendations, 14 more than last year. SALT Budapest is among the ones with 1 Michelin star.
