Consumer Price Index in Hungary Increases Again
Hungary's annualised consumer price index inched up to 4.6pc in June from 4.4pc in the previous month, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.

Food prices rose 6.2pc, but increased just 4.9pc excluding the price of eating out.

The price of eggs jumped 26.0pc, flour prices increased 24.4pc and cooking oil prices climbed 22.2pc, but the price of margarin dropped 31.2pc, dairy products prices fell 7.2pc and pork prices edged 2.0pc lower.

Household energy prices rose 8.6pc, as piped gas prices climbed 18.4pc.

Consumer durable prices rose 2.6pc. Motor fuel prices fell 1.0pc. Prices of spirits and tobacco products increased 6.3pc and clothing prices rose 2.0pc. Service prices were up 5.4pc.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile fuel and food prices, was 4.4pc.

In a statement issued after the release of the data, the National Economy Ministry highlighted government measures to counter "unjustified" price increases, including:

Mandatory caps on markups for a range of food and non-food products, as well as voluntary price restrictions adopted by banks, insurers, telecommunications service providers and pharmaceutical sector companies.

The ministry said the June rise in food prices, driven by an increase in seasonal foods seen across Europe, was in line with its forecast.

The government is tracking price developments closely and will take further steps to protect families and pensioners, if necessary, we're told. See full report available here
