'Exclusive Evening Walk' at Budapest Zoo, 25 September
- 22 Sep 2025 6:50 AM
The evening walks begin after regular opening hours, typically at 6:30 p.m., with participants guided in small groups to ensure a more personal experience. The tours are led by highly experienced Zoo professionals who know the park inside and out.
At each stop — whether at an animal house or habitat — guests are welcomed by the keepers themselves, who introduce the animals in their care and share the secrets of their daily routines.
One of the most unique aspects of these walks is that animals are presented by the very keepers who work with them every day — offering a level of access and authenticity that no other zoo in Hungary provides.
Guests even have the chance to get closer to some of the more friendly animals, making the experience all the more special.
When the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden first opened its gates in 1866, the field of zoo veterinary medicine was still in its infancy. At that time, most zoos didn’t even have their own veterinarian. At Budapest Zoo, veterinary and animal health work began in the early 1890s.
In those early days, the possibilities for treating zoo animals were very limited. There was little knowledge or experience available regarding the anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and typical diseases of exotic species.
Treatment options were also very different back then compared to what’s available today. During this special evening, guests will visit the Zoo’s modern veterinary clinic and have the chance to talk with one of the Zoo’s veterinarians.
The next stop on the walk will be the Savannah House, where guests can meet its residents alongside their keepers. Here, you’ll find weaver birds, various reptiles, and nimble small mammals such as striped grass mice, banded mongooses, and dwarf mongooses.
The evening’s highlight will be the Zoo’s rhinoceroses: Layla, Lulu, and Zafriel. Why is Layla famous around the world? And why is 23 January 2007 such a significant date in the Zoo’s history? You’ll find out during the walk!
The Botanical Garden is a spectacular sight throughout the year. The Zoo’s gardeners, horticultural cleaners, and plant collection specialists carry out regular maintenance and are also involved in the ongoing development of the park.
With the help of the Zoo’s botanical expert, guests will discover their increasingly renowned international collection of exotic succulents, and gain a glimpse behind the scenes into the greenhouse facilities that support the plant collection.
The evening will conclude with a visit to the Staff Canteen, where guests will be treated to a sandwich dinner and a selection of drinks.
