Lake in Héviz Attracts 1 Million Visitors a Year - Key Bath House to be Resurrected?
The lake bath house in Heviz, home to Europe's largest biologically active thermal lake, could reopen with the support of HUF 381m in central government funding, Balint Nagy, the MP for the region and a state secretary at the Construction and Transportation Ministry, told MTI.

Nagy noted that the bath house had been closed in March after experts identified damage, caused by gases from the lake, to the columns that support the structure.

The government funding will cover the work necessary to reopen the bath house in the short term, he said.

A development plan for the longer term will be drafted by the end of September, he added.

The closure only affects the bath house on the lake. The other structures around the lake continue to operate and visitors are welcome.

The lake in Heviz attracts around 1 million visitors a year, from all around the world.

Temporary Bathhouse to Be Built at Hévíz Thermal Lake Spa, Long-Term Development Plans Also Underway

The Hungarian government has allocated HUF 381 million to support the construction of a temporary lakeside bathhouse at the renowned Hévíz Thermal Lake Spa and to develop a long-term concept for the spa’s future – according to a government decree, announced at a press conference held at the main entrance of the facility on 9 July.

Bálint Nagy, State Secretary for Transport at the Ministry of Construction and Transport and the local MP, highlighted the national importance of the Hévíz Lake and its adjoining high-quality health tourism services, which attract around one million visitors each year from across the globe. He noted that the spa is not only a regional but a national asset.

One of the spa’s key lakeside buildings – originally constructed in 1968 and last renovated in 2005 – had to be closed earlier this spring for structural safety reasons. A technical inspection in March revealed the main section of the structure had become unsafe. Despite this, the thermal lake and all associated services remain fully open and operational for visitors.

The new temporary facility will allow the spa to continue uninterrupted services during the upcoming full-scale renovation. The aim is to have this temporary bathhouse in place by the end of this year.

Additionally, the government has set a deadline of the end of September to finalise a comprehensive long-term development plan for the Hévíz Lake and the associated hospital. The goal is to ensure that the high standard of care and service is preserved well into the future.

When asked about the estimated total cost of the full-scale redevelopment, Nagy stated that the investment, which will also include upgrades to surrounding infrastructure and the hospital, could amount to several tens of billions of forints.
