Vote for Your 'Bird of the Year' in Hungary
- 9 Jul 2025 6:09 PM
The MME has been naming the bird of the year here since 1979, which has usually been done by a public vote since 2011.
Now, the public can choose from three bush-nesting bird species, the little warbler, the song thrush and the garden warbler, on the association's website until 12:00 on July 25, the association told MTI.
Bushes provide shelter for many living creatures, and many birds find their nesting and feeding places here, and even more use these areas as a stopover and green corridor during migration. That is why it is important to view them with a nature-friendly eye, as valuable habitats and not as "untidy scrub" reports MTI.
The little warbler is a sparrow-sized, but slimmer bird. Its coloration is inconspicuous, but it is easy to recognize based on its characteristic " pulsating " song. It is insectivorous, feeding primarily on moth caterpillars and aphids. It is a frequent nester in our country, and can be found from spring to autumn in floodplain forests, bushes, and even in city parks. It spends the winter in Africa.
The song thrush is the second most common urban breeding thrush after the black thrush. It is smaller than its related species and has a completely different coloration, making it easy to distinguish from it. Its lifestyle and diet are similar to those of the black thrush, but it prefers cooler, more humid parks and gardens, where it can find plenty of small house snails.
Its nest is a real masterpiece, the inside is plastered smooth with rotting wood mixed with saliva. It spends the winter mainly in the Mediterranean, but there are also overwintering specimens.
The garden grebe is a sparrow-sized, rarely observed bird. Its belly is light yellow, its back is darker brownish, sometimes leaning towards olive green, and its legs are bluish-gray. It requires dense vegetation for nesting, so it is mostly found in wet areas and floodplain forests.
It spends the winter in the southern, subtropical part of Africa, arriving in Hungary only in late spring, and after the breeding season is over, in midsummer, it begins its migration towards the wintering grounds.
