Ancestors Days: Celebrating Hungary’s Ancient Heritage, 8 - 10 August
Ancestors Day, one of Hungary’s largest heritage festivals, will once again take place in the southern village of Bugac from August 8 to 10. The three-day event will feature horseback archery, traditional strength sports, cultural exhibitions, and family-friendly programmes.

At a press conference in Budapest, András Zsolt Bíró — chief organiser and President of the Hungarian-Turán Public Benefit Foundation — announced that this year’s celebration will once again honour the most influential ancestors of the Hungarian people.

Held for the eighth time, Ancestors Day brings together Hungarians from across the Carpathian Basin, including regions such as Transylvania (Romania), Vojvodina (Serbia), Felvidék (Slovakia), Burgenland/Őrvidék (Austria), and Transcarpathia (Ukraine).

Highlights will include the “Nomadic Procession,” a large historical parade featuring 500–600 re-enactors on horseback and on foot, dressed in authentic nomadic attire with traditional weapons and wagons. The event will also feature impressive displays of horseback archery, falconry, and greyhound demonstrations.

Visitors can also enjoy:

  • nomadic-style strength competitions (including horse and archery contests, belt wrestling, and sabre fighting),

  • archaeological and anthropological exhibitions on Hunnic and Avar heritage inside a giant yurt,

  • a bustling craft fair and live demonstrations,

  • scientific and cultural lectures,

  • and interactive activities for children.

Zoltán Varga, technical director of the Foundation, noted that the festival grounds will be equipped with misting gates, over 2,000 square metres of shaded space, a designated baby-mother yurt, and several free drinking water stations to ensure visitors' comfort.

Bugac’s mayor, László Szabó, reflected on the area's growing cultural significance since 2010, when major archaeological excavations near Pétermonostora uncovered an Árpád-era settlement. Since then, heritage-focused events such as Ancestors Day and Kurultaj have become a point of pride for the local community, alongside the popular Aranymonostor Visitor Centre.

The programme also includes a rich lineup of performances:

  • Friday: Gergely Agócs, Andrea Navratil, Misztrál, and Hungarica

  • Saturday: Ritual falcon release, shamanic drumming, a horseback show titled The Legend of the Miraculous Stag, and a concert by Mária Petrás

  • Sunday: Eastern and Hungarian folk music by Boglárka Fehér, with additional performances from Varkocs and the Regélő Fehér Táltosok

The event is free to attend and welcomes visitors of all ages.
