Eger ranked at the top in almost all age groups, falling behind only among those over 65, where Esztergom proved to be the most popular town.
Eger is the most beautiful historical town in the country according to Hungarians, according to an online survey conducted by csodásmagyarország.hu in July 2025, with 2,198 participants. Known for its Baroque town center, historic wine region, and iconic castle, the town won first place with 19 percent of the votes.
Visegrád - pictured above - known as the pearl of the Danube Bend, where the medieval royal palace and the Citadel present memories of the past, came in second place with 11 percent of the votes.
Third place on the podium went to the Mediterranean-style city of Pécs, which boasts a rich Roman heritage and World Heritage sites, with 10 percent of the vote.
In fourth place is Esztergom, home to the country’s largest church building, which received nine percent of the vote.
Szentendre, the city of artists, came in fifth with seven percent of the votes. Szeged, known as the city of sunshine, took sixth place, while Sopron, the most loyal city, came in seventh, both with six percent of the votes.
Tata, which has long attracted visitors with its picturesque lakes and Baroque castle, came in eighth place with five percent of the votes.
Ninth place went to Gyula, a town famous for its brick castle and medicinal waters, with four percent of the vote, followed by Balatonfüred, an elegant Reform-era town on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, which also received four percent.
The ranking of cities varies by age group: Kőszeg and Székesfehérvár also made it into the top ten among older people.
In terms of age groups, Eger remains the number one historical city, leading the way in all groups except for those over 65. Among 18-29 year-olds, Pécs took second place, followed by Visegrád, Szentendre, and Gyula.
Esztergom only ranks ninth in this age group. Among those aged 30–45, the podium remains unchanged, with Szentendre, Szeged, and Esztergom followed by Balatonfüred, which has moved up to seventh place.
Respondents aged 46–65 chose Pécs as the most beautiful city after Eger, followed by Visegrád. In this age group, Balatonfüred dropped out of the top ten, replaced by Kőszeg, the castle town, and Székesfehérvár, the former coronation city, with the same percentage of votes.
Among those over 65, Esztergom leads the list, followed by Visegrád and Pécs, with Tata moving up to third place. Eger finished fourth this time, with Kőszeg, Székesfehérvár, and Veszprém also appearing in the top ten.
