National Festival of 'Joy & Cheerfulness' in Hungary, Until 30 August
The Vidor Festival in Nyíregyháza begins on August 22, featuring music concerts, theater performances, film screenings and exhibitions.

The director of the Nyíregyháza Móricz Zsigmond Theatre, which organizes the all-arts festival, Róbert Kirják, said that the event is being prepared for a new level, which is largely thanks to sponsors.

He said that for instance they were able to invite performers to this year's military parade who they previously could not have due to financial reasons. He said that they had put together a program that would "move" the audiences.

The main organizer said that they tried to please all ages, so among others, T. Danny, Manuel, the First Floor, Linda Király and Viktor Király, Miklós Fenyő and, in the spirit of world music, the Boban Markovic Orkestar and the Mali-Cuban-French blues-rock band, Ilektan will give a free concert on Kossuth Square in Nyíregyháza.

Róbert Kirják drew attention to the fact that most of the programs are free to attend, with the only exceptions being performances in theaters and screenings at the Krúdy Art cinema.

During the festival, numerous theatre performances await the audience on the main stage of the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre, the Krúdy Chamber, the Rózsakert Open-Air Stage, the Bencs Villa and the Színbád, but there will also be an evening when a play is presented on the festival stage in Kossuth Square.

Most of the plays are part of the competition programme, with performances by the National, Thália, Karinthy, Örkény Theatres, the Játékszín and the Orlai Production Agency, among others.

The chairman of the jury for the competition programme will be Tibor Szervét, a Mari Jászai Award-winning actor and director, who will direct The Three Sisters at the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre in Nyíregyháza in the theatre season starting in the autumn.

The event, which will take place between August 22 and 30, will feature well-known performers, as well as free children's programs, concerts, and outdoor film screenings in the evenings at several locations in and around Kossuth Square.

Éva Rudolf Halkóné, local government representative and chairwoman of the economic and legal committee, said at the press conference that the event has developed into a national and international festival over the past 24 years and that the event has a serious tourist attraction.

She added that guests arriving in Nyíregyháza visit the city and the region's landmarks in addition to the festival programs.

The representative said that a three-year contract was signed with the Master Good group of companies in 2022 to support the Vidor Festival, which has now been extended for another four years. Master Good supports the event with 30 million forints annually.

In response to MTI's question, the organizers said that the budget of this year's Vidor festival exceeds 180 million forints, and the program series is supported by the local government and the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, in addition to the sponsors.
