Savaria Carnival, Szombathely, 21 - 24 August
Szombathely, in western Hungary, will once again turn back the clock this summer as it hosts the 24th Savaria Historical Carnival from 21 to 24 August. The four-day event will see the city’s streets filled with Roman legions, medieval merchants, baroque nobles, and a host of other historical figures from across the centuries.

This year’s parade will feature 46 historical reenactment groups from Hungary and abroad, including teams from Germany, Austria, Czechia, and Romania. Together, they will recreate scenes from periods ranging from ancient Rome to the 20th century.

Deputy Mayor Soma Horváth describes the event as “a vivid time-travel experience” for visitors.

At the heart of the procession will be Roman reenactors such as Legio XV Apollinaris and Legio Leonum Valentiniani, joined by gladiators, Sarmatian auxiliaries, senators, and priestesses of Isis. The timeline then moves forward to feature migrating tribes, Renaissance entertainers, and even World War II units.

The city’s Market Hall will also take centre stage. Named in honour of Szombathely’s traditional Saturday markets, it will be transformed into a bustling medieval marketplace, complete with artisans, storytellers, and historical characters.

From baroque townsfolk to hussars and vintage cyclists, the parade spans a broad sweep of history. Modern-day highlights include appearances by local sports champions and a performance by the energetic ATARU TAIKO drumming ensemble.

“More than just a spectacle, the carnival is a living history lesson,” said Horváth. Participants will wear authentic costumes and use historically accurate equipment, creating an immersive experience for spectators.

Beyond the parade, a rich cultural programme will unfold across the city. The Weöres Sándor Theatre, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, and the Bibliotheka Savaria storytelling events in Gayer Park will all play a part. Sports fans can also join activities at the “Champions’ Square,” hosted by the FALCO Basketball Club.

Street music will be back, with two live music stages hosting ten performances over the weekend — from solo acts to full bands — along Borok Utcája (Street of Wines) and Thököly Street.

Museums across Szombathely, led by the Savaria Museum, will offer guided tours and special events as part of the city-wide “Experience Szombathely!” programme, which runs until the end of September with more than 110 events at 39 different venues.
