Lunar Eclipse to Enchant Night Sky on Sunday
- 4 Sep 2025 9:18 AM
According to the Svábhegy Observatory in Budapest, the eclipse will last for 82 minutes, and if conditions are favourable the Moon will take on a mysterious reddish-brown hue visible to the naked eye.
In Budapest, the Moon will rise already partly eclipsed just after sunset. The total phase begins at 7:31 p.m., reaches its maximum at 8:12 p.m., and ends at 8:53 p.m.
The partial eclipse continues until 9:57 p.m., after which only the faint penumbral shadow will be visible – noticeable only to those with particularly sharp eyesight.
The timing will vary slightly across the country, starting a few minutes earlier in the east and later in the west.
As yuo may know, a lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow over the lunar surface.
Unlike a solar eclipse, this event can be safely observed without any equipment.
The Moon does not vanish entirely but glows with a reddish tint, caused by sunlight filtering and scattering through the Earth’s atmosphere – the same effect that makes sunsets appear red.
For the best view, find a spot with an unobstructed horizon to the east. The total eclipse should be easily visible without binoculars or a telescope.
Special Observatory Programme
The Svábhegy Observatory will host a special evening programme for those keen to experience the event in more detail. Several telescopes will be available for public use, offering close-up views of the Moon until 9:55 p.m.
Afterward, visitors can turn their gaze to other autumn night-sky highlights, including Saturn’s iconic rings, double stars, and the shimmering blue discs of planetary nebulae.
In addition to telescope viewings, the programme will feature expert talks about lunar eclipses, as well as opportunities to examine meteorites and moon rock samples in the observatory’s laboratory.
