Police to Introduce New European Border Registration System in Hungary
The European Union is introducing a new border registration system for third country citizens entering the Schengen area for short journeys, the Hungarian police's official website said.

The statement of the communications service of the national police force said that the European Entry/Exit System will be introduced gradually, first on the Hungary-Ukraine border, then on the Hungary-Serbia border, and then at air travel entry points. The system is designed to protect the external borders of the EU and to prevent illegal migration, the statement said.

The new system will help with identifying people who are flaunting the rules of the EU and will aid the prevention, investigation and unveiling of terrorist and other serious crimes, the statement said.

The EES system will register and store the data of short-term travellers from third countries, the date and place of border crossing as well as the entrants' photo and fingerprints. It will also store the reasons of any refusals of entry, the statement said.

The procedure is expected to increase waiting times initially, police.hu said. At the same time, the Hungarian police have upgraded their own registration system and purchased the necessary equipment to ensure a seamless introduction, it said.
