Roman Traditions to Come Alive at AmfiFest in Budapest, 11 - 13 September
- 10 Sep 2025 12:53 PM
At the capital's largest Roman-era festival, visitors can see marching Roman legionaries, Roman and barbarian troops clashing, but they can also learn about how Germanic combat initiations took place, or what the Quad-Sarmatian alliance was like.
Also as part of this event, interested parties can, among other things, learn about Roman myths and melodies.
According to a press statement sent to MTI, the AmfiFest presents classical antiquity and our Roman-era cultural heritage in an experiential way.
The festival will open on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a "Roman ceremony combined with bird divination."
Organisers highlight that the gladiators, who appeared in the former Roman amphitheatre, will take to the arena several times as the main characters of the event: interested parties can see their grueling training, learn about their weapons, cheer on the gladiatorial games, and see up close what happens in the gladiatorial school in the event of dissatisfaction among the warriors trained there.
At AmfiFest, which evokes ancient traditions, younger visitors can test their mettle in a test of courage, and a family adventure tour around the amphitheater awaits those interested.
According to press information, the all-day myth marathon will be held for the first time at AmfiFest on Sunday, where visitors can delve into the world of ancient myths, heroes and deeds.
Theatrical programs will be included at the festival, for instance the younger generation can meet the mythical creatures of the Greco-Roman culture at the performance Fauns and Nymphs by the Square Theater, while adults can listen to the passionate and ironic confession of the "barrel-dwelling philosopher", Diogenes.
In the camps of the historical reenactment teams, anyone can get acquainted with the equipment and fighting style of legionaries representing different eras of the Roman Empire's military, gain insight into the life of Roman citizens, and venture into the camps of the barbarians to observe the lifestyle of the Germanic, Marcomanni, and Sarmatian tribes.
Craft workshops, archaeological presentations, roundtable discussions, a birdwatching show, a 'slave market', fire jugglers, concerts and a fairground atmosphere await people of all ages, the press announcement reads.
