Traffic Disruption Ahead as Food Couriers Stage New Pay Protest in Budapest
- 22 Sep 2025 11:35 AM
Delivery workers linked to companies such as Wolt and Foodora will take to the streets to protest worsening working conditions and pay decreases that have severely affected their livelihoods over recent years.
The protest aims to highlight issues including the dramatic fall in couriers' purchasing power, which has apparently has dropped by around 40-50% over four years, increased workloads, lack of transparent pay structures, and problematic tax changes, especially related to the KATA flat tax regime.
Organizers want to push for a fairer tax treatment, better pay, and improved working conditions across the gig economy platforms.
A vibrant demonstration is expected with a strong presence of couriers on bicycles and scooters, likely causing traffic disruptions in central Budapest near the Parliament area at Kossuth Lajos Square.
This protest is part of a broader ongoing conflict affecting food delivery workers in Hungary, who have already protested earlier this year and are continuing to seek systemic reforms.
For expats in Budapest, this means potential traffic impacts around the city center, especially near the area during the protest period.
The event also draws attention to broader labor issues in the gig economy within Hungary and across Europe.
This protest follows earlier actions and ongoing tensions between food delivery workers and platform companies like Foodora and Wolt, who have implemented modest pay increases but remain criticized for not addressing fundamental worker grievances.
