The 42 award-winning photographers represent 31 countries - Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, El Salvador, France, Germany, Haiti, Iran, Iran/Canada, Italy, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru/Mexico, Philippines, Portugal, Russia/Germany, South Korea, Spain, Sudan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela.

Opening the exhibition, Gergely Karacsony, the mayor of Budapest, said: "The press photo does not lie, does not take a position, does not distort, it only reveals the reality of the world to us."

"These images have value not only in terms of what they depict but in how they do so, too," he said, adding that the show highlighted the courage and perseverance of the people behind the cameras.

He also referred to an accompanying exhibition entitled Budapest 75 commemorating the 1950s with contemporary Fortepan images and news details.

This is the second year the World Press Photo exhibition has been held in the Biodóm, said Endre Sós, Director General of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, in his welcoming speech.

He reminded us that they regularly host exhibitions about birds and nature, but they also want to provide as much knowledge as possible about the coexistence of humans and nature.

It is important for us to know what reality is, and reality is also the driving force behind the World Press Photo exhibition, he emphasized.

The opening event audience was also greeted by Willem van Ee, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Budapest.

He said about the work of photojournalists: "they must be able to work freely, without restrictions, to provide us with relevant and authentic information and help us navigate this extremely complex world".

He drew attention to the project Iron People, which presents the war in Ukraine from the perspective of the railway community.
