Free Online Series Launched by House of Music Hungary on World Music Day
The House of Music Hungary is marking World Music Day with the launch of a new online series featuring exclusive performances recorded in its concert hall. This initiative aims to bring the venue’s distinctive productions to a wider audience, including those who cannot attend in person due to distance or other constraints.

The Live Session series will debut on 1 October with two special concert clips. One features American composer and vocalist Meredith Monk, known for her innovative use of the human voice and interdisciplinary approach.

The other highlights the Quinteto Astor Piazzolla, a group dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Argentine tango pioneer Astor Piazzolla. Both videos showcase not only the artists but also the impressive architecture of the House of Music itself.

Meredith Monk, regarded as a trailblazer in vocal and interdisciplinary art, explores sound beyond conventional lyrics by blending theatrical, folk, and experimental styles. Earlier this year, her work Simple Sorrow struck a chord with Budapest audiences through its poignant reflection on pandemic-era isolation.

The Quinteto Astor Piazzolla carries forward Piazzolla’s groundbreaking nuevo tango style, which fuses classical, jazz, and contemporary influences.

Their Live Session performance, recorded after their July concert at the venue, includes the piece Michaelangelo 70, composed around 1970.

In addition to the new digital series, the House of Music is hosting a diverse range of live events throughout October.

Highlights include Love Tales on 2 October, a collaboration blending folk music and contemporary dance; an electronic and improvisational evening with Austrian artist Fennesz and Polish guitarist Raphael Roginski on 3 October; and family-friendly shows like Danny Bain’s musical theatre production Jack, the Savior on 4 October.

Later in the month, the programme features a tribute to composer Arvo Pärt, events combining music with discussions on mental health and art, and performances by groups such as Subcarpati, Slow Village, Kerekes Band, Romano Drom, and Besh o droM.

The month concludes with a mix of traditional and experimental projects, including Máté Mészáros’s multidisciplinary piece The Mechanics of Distance and the launch of the Pop Culture Club Library, a new four-part discussion series exploring 25 years of Hungarian popular music.

With the Live Session series and a full calendar of events, the House of Music Hungary continues its commitment to making music accessible and nurturing a space where tradition, innovation, and community intersect.
