Two Hungarian Villages Named Among World’s Best Rural Tourism Destinations
Rural Hungary has once again drawn international recognition — this time from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), which each year selects the world’s best rural destinations.

In 2025, two Hungarian settlements — Mórahalom and Hosszúhetény — were included among the winners of the Best Tourism Villages initiative.

The programme celebrates rural communities where tourism strengthens local life, supports sustainability, and preserves cultural heritage while creating opportunities for future generations.

Mórahalom – A Model of Rural Renewal

Located near Hungary’s southern border, Mórahalom has transformed itself from a small spa town into a model of sustainable rural development. Once known mainly for its thermal baths, the town has, over the past decade, introduced a range of environmental projects, cultural initiatives, and new public spaces designed to benefit both residents and visitors.

Years of community-focused planning have now earned Mórahalom global recognition.

The town’s mayor, Zoltán Nógrádi, accepted the UN Tourism award at a ceremony in China, calling it a collective achievement:

It’s a tremendous honour, an incredible experience, a huge achievement. The Secretary-General himself called this award the Oscars of Villages. What a joy — thank you all so much,” said Mayor Nógrádi.

He also expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the town’s development, emphasising that the award reflects the shared effort of the entire community.

Hosszúhetény – Tradition Meets Sustainability in the Mecsek Hills

At the foot of the Mecsek Mountains in southern Hungary, Hosszúhetény has also gained international attention for its thoughtful approach to tourism. Once a mining village, it has successfully reinvented itself through eco-conscious initiatives and the celebration of local culture.

The community promotes hiking, crafts, and culinary traditions, while also ensuring access to modern amenities such as free public Wi-Fi — a small but meaningful sign of progress. Regular cultural events and guided nature walks offer visitors a genuine glimpse of rural Hungarian life.

This balance between tradition and innovation has earned Hosszúhetény a place on UN Tourism’s list of the world’s best rural destinations, recognising its commitment to community-driven and sustainable tourism.

Hungary’s Rural Spirit on the Global Stage

With both Mórahalom and Hosszúhetény joining UN Tourism’s list, Hungary continues to demonstrate that small communities can make a global impact. These villages show how a strong sense of place, environmental awareness, and smart local development can together shape a modern and resilient rural future.
