Hydro Strawberries Hit Shops in Hungary
- 9 Oct 2025 7:12 AM
A consortium led by Veresi Paradicsom has developed an innovative method for the hydroponic cultivation of strawberries in a HUF 1.2bn project, the agribusiness told MTI.
The three-year project, in which Veresi Paradicsom partnered with Bay Zoltan Applied Research Nonprofit, Carbotech Magyarorszag and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), was supported by HUF 732m from the National R+D+I Office.
The new cultivation method involves purifying thermal water for use in greenhouse hydroponic systems and regulating artificial lighting, while combining the activity with fish farming.
The method has been used for three production cycles and "Veresi Strawberries" are now available in certain stores, offering a fresh, locally grown option even outside the usual strawberry season.
Benefits of Hydroponic Berries
Unlike imported berries that travel long distances, these hydroponically cultivated strawberries are grown under carefully controlled greenhouse conditions in Hungary, ensuring consistent flavour, appearance, and freshness all year round.
They’re slightly more expensive than seasonal field-grown fruit, but many shoppers appreciate their firm texture and balanced sweetness — particularly as a reliable local alternative when traditional strawberries aren’t in season.
The brand behind the innovation, Veresi Paradicsom, is already well known for its high-quality hydroponic tomatoes. By expanding into strawberries, the company aims to make premium, pesticide-minimised produce more widely accessible to everyday shoppers.
For those who like to shop consciously, hydroponically grown fruit also represents a more sustainable choice. The system uses less water than traditional farming, makes use of purified thermal water, and limits the environmental impact of long-distance imports.
So next time you spot “Veresi Strawberries” in a store, you’ll know they’re not just another berry - they’re part of Hungary’s growing innovation in local food production.
