Rival Budapest Marches to Mark '56 Revolution Anniversary
- 22 Oct 2025 12:34 PM
PM Orbán announced that Fidesz will hold a "Peace March" starting at 11 a.m., beginning near Budapest’s Margaret Bridge and ending at Kossuth Lajos Square, where Orbán will give a speech at 1 p.m.
The event is expected to draw a large crowd, with the Prime Minister describing it as “monumental” and promising surprises.
The organisers urged all Hungarians, including those from Transylvania, Vojvodina, southern Slovakia, and Carpathian Ruthenia, to join the march and demonstrate their commitment to Hungary's independence and traditional values.
At the same time, Péter Magyar of the Tisza Party plans a “National March” beginning at 2 p.m. from Deák Ferenc Square.
He explained that Kossuth Square would be too small for the expected turnout, so the march will proceed to Heroes’ Square for the commemoration.
Magyar framed the event as a stand for the ideals of the 1956 revolution and a vision of a truly independent Hungary.
The anniversary will also include the traditional flag-raising ceremony at Kossuth Lajos Square early that morning. These events provide an opportunity to reflect on Hungary’s history and its ongoing political debates.
