World Athletics Ultimate Championship to be Held in Budapest
Hosting the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest marks a significant milestone for the city, bringing high expectations for a smooth and memorable experience for both athletes and spectators. Márton Gyulai, Sports Director of World Athletics (WA), highlighted the challenge of staging this first-ever world final in Budapest next year.

Speaking on the M4 Sport channel, Gyulai explained that preparations are progressing well to deliver an event that will captivate audiences worldwide. He stressed the importance of local engagement, emphasizing WA’s close coordination with the Hungarian Athletics Association to maximize participation from domestic athletes.

“Those who came to the 2023 World Championships should be encouraged to return to the National Athletics Centre. To achieve this, it’s essential to have homegrown athletes competing alongside the world’s best,” Gyulai said. He added that having such a premier facility and a dedicated organizing team makes Budapest an ideal host city.

The World Athletics Ultimate Championship will take place over three days, from September 11 to 13, 2026. Around 360 athletes will compete across 28 events, all vying for the highly sought-after title of Ultimate Champion. Eligible participants include Olympic and world champions, Diamond League winners, relay world titleholders, and the leading performers of the year.

This new biennial international track and field event, organized by World Athletics, will debut in Budapest. It promises an exciting atmosphere with a total prize fund of USD 10 million — the largest ever in the sport’s history — with individual winners set to receive USD 150,000.

The 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest were the largest sporting event ever hosted in Hungary. The National Athletics Centre welcomed over 400,000 fans from 120 countries, while millions more around the globe watched the competition.

Built specifically for the 2023 Championships, the stadium is located on the eastern bank of the Danube in southern Budapest.

Initially equipped with 35,000 seats including a temporary upper tier, it now has a permanent capacity of 15,000 after the removal of the temporary section. The freed-up space has been transformed into an open leisure area accessible to the public.
