Ice Cream Day: Find Free Scoops on Sunday Around Lake Balaton
- 24 Jul 2025 7:38 AM
The campaign aims to draw attention to the diversity and quality of ice cream available around Lake Balaton, the Balaton Tourism Association informed MTI.
The aim of the summer-long initiative is to promote local artisanal ice cream shops in a playful way, and make ice cream a true summer experience in the Balaton region, they wrote.
As part of the campaign, ice cream scoops are hidden in the form of coupons placed at popular locations around Lake Balaton, including beaches, promenades and lookout towers.
Lucky ones can find a coupon and get free ice cream at shops participating in this year's Balaton Fagyija competition.
The press statement says families can search for the coupons from Veszprém, through Balatonfüred and all the way to Balatongyörök.
A Balaton fairy tale hero, Captain Füred, is also participating in the campaign, and he is also promoting the importance of reading - as ice cream coupons will be put in storybooks that are related to travel and family.
According to a press statement, Ice Cream Day was declared an official holiday in 1984 by US President Ronald Reagan to recognize the importance of ice cream in America's culture and economy.
Accordingly, July is "National Ice Cream Month", and the third Sunday of the month (this year, July 20) is observed as " National Ice Cream Day ", when ice cream manufacturers, confectionery shops and fast food restaurants across the country celebrate with various promotions, free tastings and related programs.
As they wrote, Ronald Reagan's favorite ice cream was vanilla, so most of the coupons for the Lake Balaton "treasure hunt " will entitle you to ice cream in this flavor, but many other types of ice cream are also offered in the sale.
According to the organizers of the event, Americans consume more than four times as much ice cream as Hungarians.
