Ági Szalóki, Festival Theatre, 22 October

Ági Szalóki, Festival Theatre, 22 October
"Ági Szalóki is celebrating her thirtieth birthday with this concert. She has sung in numerous formations (for example: Attila Korom Band, Besh o droM, Ökrös, Zurgó, Balkan Syndicate and the Béla Szakcsi Lakatos New Hungarian Gipsy Jazz). It is hard to find a common denominator between the programs of these groups and her programme; for this reason she is not singing with an army of collaborators.

Instead the concert will be in two sections. The first half concentrates principally on the album Hallgató (“Listener”) and songs from the album are augmented with new numbers featuring folk instruments. The second half is devoted to folk songs arranged for string quartet accompaniment; they have been created especially for this evening – and of course for Ági’s voice – by Kálmán Oláh.

“I sing because I have a strong desire within to sing. I sing from love and good humour, in my sorrow and troubles, because song feels good, it cures, it works miracles and it gives freedom. On the bus or tram, under the noise of the metro, while waiting for the light to turn green at the zebra crossing, even in bubbles when I’m swimming. I sing for myself and for others. I put myself before others. And before the country and the world.

To start with, I was very scared. My hands and legs shook. I shut my eyes. I didn’t exist, only my voice lived. Now I am here, living, my eyes are open. My eyes carry my thirty years. I still shake and quiver, even now. I’m sure this will happen tonight. This concert is a birthday present for me. I am glad I can share it with others.” Ági Szalóki
