Swan Lake, Ballet For Children, Festival Theatre, 9 October |
"Odette, the beautiful princess lives by the lake with her companions turned by magic into a swan. The curse of the evil magician, Rothbart can only be rendered powerless by true love. Until that arrives, Odette and her companions can only enjoy their human forms from midnight to sunrise.Siegfried, the young prince is hunting in the forest one night with his company. He is just about to target a graceful swan, when the hour strikes midnight, and Odette turns into her human figure and tells her the story of her life. They fall in love instantly. Odilia, daughter of the magician, looks at the unfolding love with jealousy. Dawn approaches: Odette and Siegfried must say goodbye for a time. Odilia asks help from her father to be able to assume Odette's form in order to win the love of the prince.
Rothbart fulfils her wish. The following day, brides-to-be arrive to Siegfried, however his heart beats only for Odette. Odilia enters in the shape of Odette, and Siegfired embraces her happily. Then the real Odette appears, and seeing the faithlessness of Siegfried, she runs away disappointed. Siegfried realises the fraud, and follows his love to the lake. Rothbart goes after him to prevent the lovers from meeting, however the swans join against him. Siegfried vows eternal love to Odette, thus the spell is broken and the swans regain their human forms."
