'Gáyan Uttejak Orchestra', Festival Theatre, 28 December |
 "László Hortobágyi was born in 1950 and has been researching and collecting North Indian music since the age of seventeen. He has also studied rudra-vina, sitar, surbahar and tabla playing. In 1980, he founded the Gáyan Uttejak Society, inspired by the Hindu-Mohammedan music society led by V. N. Bhatkhande from 1884 to 1917. From 1984, the Gáyan Uttejak Orchestra became the “house band” of the Society.Comprising initially of seven members, from 1989 the band’s name served as a shop window for presenting László Hortobágyi’s studio work, which had the aim of fusing musical traditions of non-existing and mythological worlds.
This possible but never materialising world music appeared on more than fifty albums, published by Hungarian, German, Dutch, American, Indian, English, Greek and French labels.
They have won awards and last year the Gáyan Uttejak Orchestra was reorganised and again appears in live instrumentalists: the classical North Indian musical system is now realised via a live electronic mixing and sound synthesis.
