Four Candidates In Ujbuda By-Election

Four Candidates In Ujbuda By-Election
"There will be four candidates in the by-election for the vacant 11th District of Ujbuda parliamentary seat of the late Christian Democrat MP András Deák.

Standing will be Bence Rétvári from the Christian Democrats and Fidesz, Imre Lakos for the Free Democrats and the Socialists, Miklós Csapody representing the Democratic Forum and Zoltán Fenyvessy standing for the Hungarian Justice and Life Party. The by-election, unprecedented in Budapest since the change of regime, will be held on January 27.

Young Christian Democratic Federation chairman Rétvári, 28, is tipped to take the seat as a right winger has always won the seat in the constituency since 1990. The first round of the by-election will be valid if at least half of the eligible voters turn out and if one of the candidates obtains more than half of the vote. If the by-election is invalid, a second round will be held on February 10.

Rétvári told Magyar Hírlap at the weekend that his rivals are not Lakos or Csapody but the disappointment, apathy or indifference of voters. He said “people feel deceived as the activity and lies of the Gyurcsány cabinet have turned them away from politics, something he experiences when he meets voters during his campaign.”
