'The Music of Kaurismäki', National Concert Hall, 1 March

'The Music of Kaurismäki', National Concert Hall, 1 March
"Born in 1955, Anssi Tikanmäki frequented rock, folk and jazz circles while at the same time graduating from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He led one of the most popular bands in Finland, Ikaros, who made a joint recording with the Academy’s symphony orchestra, Landscape which was inspired by folk music and published in 1981.

That same year, Anssi met the independent film making brothers Mika and Aki Kaurismäki and this led to a joint venture. So far, Anssi has written music for nine Kaurismäki films of which Aki Kaurismäki’s 1999 silent iflm Juha enjoyed perhaps the greatest success – it ranks alongside Philip Glass’s Kundum and Lalo Schifrin’s Tango.

Now a noted specialist of silent films, Anssi also has distinguished himself with music for theatre and other films (The Road to Tampere, The Unknown Soldier, Here Under The North Star, and Greed and Films respectively), and he has also dabbled in pop music (A Traditional Pop Record). He appeals to many tastes and for this one off occasion, Anssi Tikanmäki and his orchestra will accompany the performance in Hungary of Aki Kaurismäki’s legendary silent film Juha.

Sami Kuoppamäki – percussion, Juuso Nordlund – bass guitar, Eemil Tikanmäki – guitar, violin, Masa Orpana – saxophone, Eljas Tikanmäki – keyboard instruments, Anssi Tikanmäki – keyboard instruments
