Fidesz Remains More Than Twice As Popular Than The Socialists

Fidesz Remains More Than Twice As Popular Than The Socialists
"Support for Hungary's liberal Free Democrats (SZDSZ) has doubled in May and is now up at 2%, the latest survey of pollster Tárki showed on Wednesday. This, however, is still within the margin of error, just like the support for minor opposition party, the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF), which stands at 3%.

Fidesz remained more than twice as popular in Tárki's monthly poll than the Socialist Party (MSZP) that now governs in minority as the SZDSZ quit their alliance on 30 April.

Support for Hungary's parliamentary parties has not declined further in May, and they managed to become a little bit more popular than in April when the population was not exactly thrilled by them. The ratio of the undecided, however, grew further, Tárki said.

The pollster found that 35% of the eligible voters support the main opposition party Fidesz, up from 33% in April, but down from 37% in March. Meanwhile, the MSZP managed to prop up its popularity to 14% among eligible voters from 12% in April and 13% in March.

The lead of Fidesz over the Socialists among voters that are even willing to pick a party is now 38 percentage points.

Among decided voters with party preference the lead of Fidesz is 44 ppts, as its support was 67% in May (unchanged from April but down 2 ppts from March), while the Socialists “enjoyed" a support of 23% in this category, vs. 22% in April and 20% in March.

Support for the SZDSZ was 2% among eligible voters (vs. 1% in April) and 3% among decided voters with party preference (vs. 1% in April). The MDF had a 4% support in both categories in May, up 1 ppt in the former and unchanged in the latter from the previous month. (Note that the margin of error is 3.1%.)

The pollster said turnout would be 55% if elections were to be held this Sunday, which is the same as a month ago, but down from 57% in March."
