New In Budapest: 'My Blueberry Nights'

New In Budapest: 'My Blueberry Nights'
"After a rough break-up, Elizabeth sets out on a journey across America, leaving behind a life of memories, a dream and a soulful new friend; a café owner—all while in search of something to mend her broken heart.

Waitressing her way through the country, Elizabeth befriends others whose yearnings are greater than hers, including a troubled cop and his estranged wife and a down-on-her luck gambler with a score to settle. Through these individuals, Elizabeth witnesses the true depths of loneliness and emptiness, and begins to understand that her own journey is part of a greater exploration within herself.

Movie type: Drama Romantic - Like director Wong-Kar Wai's Hong Kong films, this is a fairly slow and arty drama with romantic themes. Adult moviegoers with a taste for more unconventional and arty films are the target. The more established stars such as Jude Law and Natalie Portman play supporting parts to the true lead, singer-turned-actress Norah Jones.

Director: Wong Kar-Wai

Script: Wong Kar-Wai

Starring: Norah Jones (Elizabeth), Jude Law (Jeremy), Rachel Weisz (Sue Lynne)

Length: 1 hr. 30 min.

Reviews:

“Average Often ponderous, sometimes pretentious and mostly clichéd, this contrived meditation on longing and loss feels like a missed opportunity. “USA Today

“Good Block's convincingly world-weary dialogue, meanwhile, offers an interesting counterbalance to Wong's sometimes airy, heart-wide-open romanticism.” TV Guide Online

“Above Average Wong Kar Wai mixed his ever-more-deft space/time manipulations with ever-deeper contemplations of the vicissitudes of romantic love. The results were movie romances like no other, heartbreak trips that seduced the eyes and ears, wrenched the heart and dizzied the intellect.” Premiere

“Good Where Wong goes awry in this, his first English-language film, is by succumbing to convention - the musical-montage/interludes that punctuate his scattershot road movie,..” Newsday
