'Music of the Carpathian Basin', Festival Theatre, 24 October

'Music of the Carpathian Basin', Festival Theatre, 24 October
"An event in the celebratory concert series marking the gift of Hungarian music CDs to seven libraries outside Hungary and within the Carpathian Basin

Featuring: Ifjú Szívek Hungarian Dance Group (Upper Hungary), CimbaliBand and a guest fiddler from Voivodina, Gergely Agócs (Upper Hungary), István Pál “Szalonna” (Transkarpathia) and his band & Ágnes Herczku, Mária Maczkó

This series of benefit concerts is linked to the gift of CDs to neighbouring libraries and is jointly organised by Periferic Records and the Hungarian Reformed Church. Since 2001 they have staged concerts in which world and folk music ensembles presenting the folk music traditions of the Carpathian Basin have appeared from Transkarpathia to Voivodina, from Transylvania to Upper Hungary – with recorded artists heard alongside Hungarian musicians.

Following the ideas of Bartók and Kodály, the artists and organisers believe that folk music and its more modern version, world music, have a place in the world’s leading concert halls.

The gift of CDs began in 2003 when Periferic Records offered single copies of 150 of its publications to the libraries of Révkomárom (Komarno), Beregszász (Beregovo), Kolozsvár (Cluj) and Szabadka (Subotica). They were joined by 75 other record companies and the gift swelled to 450 CDs, with a total value of six million forints.

This donation has now spread to the entire Carpathian Basin and seven libraries in the seven neighbouring countries to Hungary receive each year CDs to the value of about six million forints. These CDs are handed over at concerts in each of the seven cities, following the Budapest gala concert.

For the organisers, communicating the customs and traditions of music and culture of the people living in the Carpathian Basin is a duty and a mission: a cultural “exploration” that is significantly aided by the gift of CDs and the accompanying concert series.

The principal patron of the event is Dalma Mádl, Hungarian Caritas good will ambassador.
