Lack of radiotherapy facilities in Hungary

At least ten thousand cancer patients cannot get proper treatments in Hungary due to the insufficient number of radiotherapy facilities – writes the Hungarian daily newspaper Népszabadság.

Out of the country’s 40 radiation apparatus 8 are out of order and a good part of them need to be replaced – according to the Parliamentary Health Committee. 17 % of specialist posts are vacant in the country and there is a regional disparity in Hungary as far as the number of radiotherapy treatments is concerned.

According to Olga Ésik, professor and head of department of the Faculty of Medicine at Pécs University, while the level of treatments in the South-Alföld region is similar to Western European standards, Budapest and Hungary’s northern region fall short of the required level.
