Sale settles water bill

Cash-strapped first division squad ETO Gyôr saw their water supply reconnected thanks to a $100,000 (Ft27 million) transfer deal in which striker Gábor Vayer switched to Portugal’s mid-league Santa Clara.

Cash-strapped first division squad ETO Gyôr saw their water supply reconnected thanks to a $100,000 (Ft27 million) transfer deal in which striker Gábor Vayer switched to Portugal’s mid-league Santa Clara.

ETO manager László Peczár announced midweek that the deal had brought a much-needed cash injection to the club, allowing it to pay a long-outstanding Ft11 million ($40,000) bill to regional water company Pannon Víz Rt.

Vayer, however, displayed an unexpected lack of enthusiasm over the deal. He told Hungarian sports newspaper Nemzeti Sport, "This may sound strange, but I am not too pleased fro several reasons.

"I wanted to help the club out of a difficult situation, and leave the city in such a way that the team was strong, but this hasn’t come about," he said.

But disappointment over money appeared to be the player’s biggest gripe. "I ended up signing a contract with less favorable terms than those originally discussed," he claimed.

The striker added he suspected his manager may have "forgotten" their initial negotiations.

Vayer said he had, nevertheless, signed the contract partly to help the club financially, and partly to take advantage of the additional exposure an international deal would hopefully give him.

"For me, Santa Clara is a springboard and I should be able to draw the attention of bigger, stronger clubs."

He also hoped the move would also improve his image in Hungary, and increase his chances of a place in the Hungarian national squad.
