DK To Turn TO EC Over Police Raids On Hungarian NGOs
The leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has said it will turn to the European Commission over a recent police raid of the Ökotárs Foundation, which helps distribute Norway Grants.

Investigations launched against two of the civil organisations handling Norway Civil Grants disbursements and the “groundless reports” filed against their leaders are aimed at silencing these organisations which fight against government corruption and for the rights of Hungarians, DK said.

DK MEPs Péter Niedermüller and Csaba Molnár are turning to the European Commission with a written question: “Does the harassment of civil organisations violate an agreement between Norway and the EU and does it violate conventions of the Council of Europe endorsed by Hungary?”

A special unit of Hungary’s police force searched the Budapest offices of the Ökotárs and DemNet foundations on Monday under suspicion of embezzlement and unauthorised financial activities.

Hungarian police said that the action was neither excessive nor intimidating.
