Budapest Taxi Drivers Continue Anti-Uber Demo

Budapest’s taxi drivers have continued their protest against car-dispatcher Uber, blocking traffic at the junction of Andrássy Avenue, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and József Attila Street in the city centre on Tuesday morning. The protesters have blocked the site with some 30 taxis, leaving only one lane in each direction for traffic to pass by. The organisers, who started their demonstration on Monday morning without prior notice, have since filed for a permit. At MTI’s inquiry, the police said that negotiations were under way.
The opposition Socialists urged the drafting of European regulations on shared services. Socialist MEP Tibor Szanyi said that banning services provided on a community basis was not viable, but added that protests blocking traffic in Budapest was not a good solution either.
Szanyi said that new kinds of services will not only increase competition but promote market development, too.
“More and more people will have an opportunity to travel because they are offered affordable travel services and accommodation … the young generation is not interested in oldfashioned cartels and dictatorial prices.
That old world is over. Sensible and transparent rules are needed to end the agony,” he said.
