Ambassador Foley Strengthens Bonds Of Friendship Through Gastronomy

Ambassador Foley Strengthens Bonds Of Friendship Through Gastronomy
"At the beginning of this month, Ambassador April H. Foley led a delegation of Embassy, Fulbright, and Debrecen American Corner personnel to the 9th Annual Goulash Festival in Szolnok.

As the guest of Szolnok Mayor Szalay, the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok regional government, and Festival Organizer Andor Királyházi, the Ambassador opened the event with words of praise for an initiative that brings together goulash enthusiasts from all over the world. The Ambassador was pleased to note that the U.S. Embassy was competing in the goulash competition for the first time with a brew that drew plaudits from discriminating tasters.

Ambassador Foley also emphasized that this kind of friendly competition not only yields a flavorful lunch, but offers a significant contribution to mutual understanding and friendship between the U.S. and Hungary. Embassy staff shared information on traveling to the U.S. and on the services provided by the Information Resource Center. The Fulbright Commission's Student Advisor explained requirements for studying in American universities and details on how to get an individualized consultation. And the Debrecen American Corner Director acquainted visitors with the outreach activities offered by American Corners in Veszprém, Pécs, as well as Debrecen.

Tens of thousands of people attended the Festival, with hundreds stopping by the U.S. tent to pick up materials and ask questions. Both print and broadcast media covered the Ambassador's opening remarks and her greeting of guests at the U.S. information table."
