Toldi, Cirko Gejzír Show New Russian Film

Toldi, Cirko Gejzír Show New Russian Film
"Budapest's Toldi and Cirko Gejzír cinemas will show a sampling of films by young Russian directors in a programme dubbed Russia Rulez between October 13 and 17.

Though Eisenstein and Tarkovsky are well known names to film lovers around the world, exposure for Russia's younger directors has been limited. Most Hungarian cinema goers would be hard pressed to name a contemporary Russian director beside Nikita Mihalkov, the director of Burnt By The Sun (1994).

But talent in Russia is in no short supply. There is Aleksandr Sokurov, director of Russian Ark, The Sun and Alexandra, who is often called the "new Tarkovsky"; there is the duo of Boris Khlebnikov and Aleksei Popogrebsky, who directed Roads to Koktebel; there is the Kazakhstan-born Timur Bekmambetov, who is currently working in the United States; and there is Ilya Khrjanovsky, whose film Four boasts a script by Vladimir Sorokin.

One of the highlights of the programme will be a roundtable talk on Russian Cinema with Yuri Moroz, Kornél Mundruczó, Alexei German and Svetlana Karmelita on October 14."
