"The Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) is not going to initiate early elections after Parliament's final vote on the 2010 budget in November, the party will continue backing PM Gordon Bajnai through the next ballot due in the spring of 2010, MSZP parliamentary group leader Attila Mesterházy told InfoRádió this morning. Neither should the party re-elect officials until next year's budget has been approved, Mesterházy added.“We have had several young party members holding key political offices within the Socialist Party," Mesterházy replied to an interview question on an alleged rift between the younger and older generation of politicians, adding that he was a great believer in cooperation between different generations.
July 4's party convention will have several alternatives to choose from, Mesterházy said. “However at the moment a most important question is what the new political content will be on which delegates can reach a consensus. This political content - practically a new election program - will have to be approved at the next convention in the fall once the 2010 budget is finalized."
Mesterházy did not agree with the view that Hungary should have early elections after the debate of the 2010 budget. “MSZP maintains the view that the current government should stay in office until the 2010 ballot when its mandate expires, carrying policies through this important crisis management period," he added.
“There are some crisis management measures that will have to stay in place even after the 2010 budget [is approved]," Mesterházy continued, citing measures aimed at new job creation, broadening the employment base and mitigating the negative impact of the crisis."
