'Mark Knopfler', Sportaréna, 12 May

'Mark Knopfler', Sportaréna, 12 May
"Does the title sound suspicious? It isn’t. The 4 letters are the initials of the full title of Mark Knopfler’s new, 2008 concert tour, Kill To Get Crimson.

The tour consists of 65 concerts and visits the whole of Europe; Mr. Dire Straits is coming to the Budapest Sportaréna on 12 May 2008.

When people talk about Mark Knopfler, they always mention his Hungarian roots, but he was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on the 12th of August 1949. He was around seven years old when the Knopfler family moved to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the North-East of England.

As a young boy Mark was inspired by his uncle Kingsley's harmonica and boogie-woogie piano playing. Later, in his teens, he set his heart on an all too expensive flamingo-pink Fender Strat, just like Hank Marvin's, but because it was impossible for him to buy it, in the end he had to settle for a £50 twin pick-up Hofner Super Solid.

Even that price, £50 was a lot of money in those days, so his commitment and attachment towards guitar music was clearly indicated with the investment. Like lots of other guitar-toting schoolboys of the 1960s, Mark served an early apprenticeship by forming and joining anonymous schoolboy bands and listening to guitarists such as Scotty Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Django Reinhardt and James Burton."
