"The Chief Patron of the annual awareness raising event is the wife of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary, this year, Dr. Klára Dobrev.
Professional Patrons are Minister of Ecqual Opportunities, Dr. Kinga Göncz and Minister of Health, Dr. Jenő Rácz. Patrons are wives of former Prime Ministers: Mrs. József Antall, Mrs. Péter Boross, Mrs. Gyula Horn, Dr. Anikó Lévai and Katalin Csaplár Medgyessy.
Other famous patrons include Dobó Kata and 'Pa Dö Dö.'
For the first time in Hungary, the government, the business world as well as the NGOs, have all joined forces as partners in this movement.
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women throughout the world, in Europe and also in Hungary. The death rate in the EU is only slightly over 20%, while the same rate in Hungary is almost 50%.
The primary aim of the alliance is to promote early diagnosis of breast cancer in order to reduce the death rate. The technology needed for modern screening and treatment is available in Hungary; however, women in the most endangered age group do not yet appreciate the importance of screening and early diagnosis. In addition, it is essential to reduce women’s risks by promoting a healthy lifestyle and health development.
In Hungary centrally organized screening started in December of 2001. In the framework of the program launched by the National Public Health Office, all women between the ages of 45 and 65 receive an invitation for breast cancer screening bi-annually. Those concerned are invited to the screening center nearest to their domicile. About 1,260,000 women of this age group live in Hungary. Half of these women have already received the invitation but only 43% of them have actually participated in the screening. Currently, 45 accredited centers exist in Hungary. The quality of their activity is continuously controlled by the State Health and Medical Office.
Healthy nutrition, exercise, sufficient relaxation, stress reduction and omission of smoking are the essential factors for maintaining our health. Healthy nutrition requires the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables three times a day, as well as sufficient amounts of rice and other cereals (e.g. whole wheat bread), while reducing the intake of fat and salt. Regular exercise is also of great importance.
Everyone can choose a kind of exercise according to one’s abilities – even if it is only a walk - but one should do it regularly, at least three times half an hour a week. It is very important that we have the time for an undisturbed night-sleep and since we cannot always change external conditions we have to find a personal defense method against stress.
In order to raise awareness we invited everyone who wishes to contribute to the fight against breast cancer to Roosevelt Square in Budapest on 30. September 2007. "
